This is a brand new bike from Surly and we love it. We’re chunky tyre format fans so to have a steel drop bar gravel frame with big clearance and trail friendlier geometry is right up our street. Our team ride in the Cotswolds, Mendips and Quantocks, Lake District, NW Scotland and New Zealands Southern Alps on a regular basis and we think the GG is perfect for fast fun trails, proper off the grid touring where bikepacking gets real whilst also being able to smash the gravel or allow you to get into a tuck for the infinite tarmac headwind grindout!
We’ve specced it in our favourite gravel mullet drivetrain combining the best of Shimano with 105 shifters, Deore cranks, GRX 11 speed rear mech and a Sunrace 11-46t cassette balanced out by the magic of the Wolf Tooth Goat Link. As you may have seen from our builds, we love Shimano drivetrains having found them to be the most reliable and robust in UK conditions (sometimes Shimano BBs seem to go on forever!). ‘Mark the Mechanic’ won the argument on brakes this time with TRP Spyre Calipers (Darroch loves Avid BB7s. We’ve popped some nice wide Salsa Cowchipper bars on and they just feel sooo right with some Arundel Rubber Gecko for comfort and sweaty grippiness. We’ve popped some other nice bits’n’bobs around the frame in a nod to the UK/US special relationship including a Whisky Parts seat post and a Gusset Black Jack Saddle. We like Terravail, we like tanwalls and we like rapid grippy tyres that hang on when it gets a bit greasy in the summer hence packing the Honcho 2.6s… In summary, as with all of our shop custom builds we’re proud of this gravel delinquent, we didn’t want to over spec and price the bike but wanted it to feel muscled, combative yet comfortable when you’re ready to cruise it or putting in a big road shift.
